MHSAA Launches Award Program
In
October 2008, MHSAA launched the “Dr. Gary Stephens” Science Award. The
purpose of this award is to encourage and promote advanced studies in the
fields of Science and/or Medicine. Dr. Gary Stephens, himself an alumni of
MHS, practices in the State of New York and has performed the first
successful open heart surgery in Guyana. Dr. Gary Stephens has donated the
initial amount of US$5,000.00 and has pledged similar amounts annually. The
“Dr. Gary Stephens” Science Award will be administered by the MHSAA and will
be awarded to one or two students annually. To be eligible for the award the
Student/s must demonstrate exceptional ability in the field of Science and
intend to pursue advance studies in this field at a post Secondary
Institution. Performance at the CSEC examination will be the index of
ability. We hope that Dr. Gary Stephens’s philanthropic gesture will serve
as a precedent for other alumni even as it reinforces our belief in selfless
giving. We are encouraged to keep giving of our time and resources to
provide much needed assistance to the students and the staff of Mackenzie
High.
